This week on Inland Sessions.
♪ Hi I'm Rachel Bade-McMurphy, we are Imagine Jazz Quartet.
I hope you'll join us tonight on Inland Sessions.
Rachel Bade-McMurphy: Hi, we're the imagine jazz quartet.
We're so thankful to be playing for you this evening, after so many months of not being able to perform, we're going to perform four original compositions for you this evening, starting with an original composition called the Midnight Train.
♪ ♪ You appear to me like a midnight train I see you in the distance ♪ ♪ as you leave Speeding toward the dawn never knowing home Your ♪ ♪ footprints carved by boots that walk alone Fingers grip against ♪ ♪ suitcase that you hold That tightly grips round what you ♪ ♪ can't let go.
Bridge tracks speed past sparkling dreams Like ♪ ♪ rapids crash against while sunsets pass You only skim the ♪ ♪ surface of love which perches like white dove wings on a blue ♪ ♪ sloped plain Aged pines wave friendly greetings stretching ♪ ♪ brittle arms Inviting you to rest your head where the soft ♪ ♪ moss carpet cradles firm roots.
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ Saxophone Solo ♪ ♪ Xylophone Solo ♪ ♪ Bridge tracks speed past sparkling dreams Like rapids ♪ ♪ crash while you speed past Collapsed upon the outskirts of ♪ ♪ hope, left thirsty while salt-filled springs flood so you ♪ ♪ can't see Aged pines wave friendly greetings stretching ♪ ♪ brittle arms They know you'll never rest your head where the ♪ ♪ soft moss carpet cradles firm roots.
♪ ♪ Tomorrow opens up its weary eyes through the tunnel towards a ♪ ♪ brisk new dawn, Exiting the night you said goodbye ♪ ♪ ♪ So even when I come up with an idea, the group element and the input by each individual member is very, very important.
My personal influences early on in childhood go everything from classic rock and hard rock to country and eighties music and many popular formats.
So when I write music, even though I am a trained jazz musician, I oftentimes hear melodies coming from a rock element or something, some other fusion.
So I would best describe our music as fusion or post fusion.
And that is simply a putting together of many influences.
This next selection is a tune that I wrote and appeared on our 2008 CD release the unspoken.
It was originally written with lyrics and we're going to perform the instrumental version tonight.
This is called Fly.
♪ ♪ ♪ Saxophone Solo ♪ ♪ ♪ Bass Solo ♪ ♪ ♪ I've heard people, um, quoted that, that say, jazz isn't something you find it's something that finds you or maybe that's caught, it's infectious in a way.
When I hear someone like Billy Holiday or John Coltrane play, there's something in their sound that just draws me in and makes me realize that the feelings that I have are felt by other people.
And so when I feel that in the music that I listen to, that's something that I also want to convey to other people, hopefully.
This next selection is a brand-new composition that I wrote during COVID-19 because the time and the passing of time felt very different than anything before.
And so, this selection called windows deals with not only the passing of time, but also the feeling of aging and the possibility of losing sight of your plans and your dreams while something else takes over.
This is called Window.
♪ Looking out the window, she's encouraged by the fluttering of wings.
They come and go... Sipping from her coffee, she breathes a sigh months pass as she blinks her eyes.
Cannot stop the rolling waves of second hands and seasons Rest will only expedite the changing of the guard Equipped with teeth, prepared to tear the lifework from your hands And yet you stand there, Looking out the window...
Letting go.
♪ Cannot stop the rolling waves of second hands and seasons Rest will only expedite the changing of the guard Equipped with teeth, prepared to tear the lifework from your hands And yet you stand there, Looking out the window...
Letting go ♪ I think playing jazz brings us joy and allows us to express ourselves freely.
And when the audience is along for the ride, it allows them to really follow along in, in something that, because it's not predetermined, it is new and different every time.
We'd like to thank you so much for listening tonight.
And we're so grateful for this opportunity to play music after so many months of not being able to do so.
I'd like to take a moment to introduce the band.
This is Lauren McKinley on the vibes, Nick Isherwood on the bass, Brendan McMurphy on the drums.
And my name is Rachel Bade-McMurphy this next selection that we're going to play is called Myron and Friends.
This is something we wrote in 2016, and it's jointly composed by myself and Brendan McMurphy.
