And the first person I played it for, it was Glen Campbell, because everything I ever played, I played for him first.
His ears did not fail.
And then, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, and the guy with the pigtails.
Uh... [ Laughter ] Uncle Willie.
And so they're all making a record, and they can't get along anyway.
I mean, if you imagine those four voices making a chord... And so Glen came down, and he said, "Listen, I got a song with four verses.
It's got a different persona in it for each -- each person.
And so it'll -- it'll be peace in the valley.
No more --" So they're sitting in the studio, and they're playing "Highwayman" for Johnny Cash for the first time.
And it does make some suggestions about reincarnation and, you know, spirituality.
And it got to the end, and it's like dead quiet in the studio.
And you could hear a pin drop.
And everybody's looking at Johnny Cash.
And Johnny Cash looked at him and said, "Well, I want to fly the starship."
[ Laughter ] [ Applause ] Now, we don't have a complete posse out here tonight.

[ Laughter ] [ Cheers and applause ] Um... I lived in two different worlds when I was a kid.

♪♪ And one day, he said to me -- I'd played this little ballad for him, and he said, "That's a good song."

You know, there was a period in songwriting when the guys that I worshiped, like Yip Harburg and Harold Arlen and all the old traditional guys -- Johnny Mercer, Rodgers and Hart -- and those kind of songwriters had kind of disappeared.
