About the Film

Thirteen American colonies unite in rebellion, win an eight-year war to secure their independence, and establish a new form of government that would inspire democratic movements at home and around the globe. What begins as a political clash between colonists and the British government grows into a bloody struggle that will engage more than two dozen nations and forever change the world.

Crossing the Delaware
December 26, 1776
Just months after defeat at Long Island, Washington’s army crosses the Delaware River and overwhelms a surprised Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey. The Americans overwhelm the defenders, capturing about 900 prisoners and securing a much-needed victory near the end of the year. Just days later on the eve of 1777, with many of his soldiers’ contracts set to expire, Washington must entreat his regiments to stay just one month longer.
