Senses Spinner Game

Our five senses — see, hear, smell, taste, and touch — help us observe and describe the world around us. Cat reminds us that the five senses “make you feel so glad you’re alive!” Your eyes to see, ears to hear, nose to smell, mouth to taste, and hands to touch all help us explore and understand life on Earth.
In this activity, create a senses game that allows you to explore the special gifts each of the five senses offer.

Directions
Create the spinner base by dividing a paper plate into five equal sections.
Label each section with one of the five senses. You can draw pictures, write words, or cut and paste pictures from magazines that represent the senses. While you decorate, ask your child what they already know about the five senses.

Set up the spinner by placing a paper clip in the center. Use a pencil to hold the paper clip in place. When you spin, you’ll hold the pencil upright and spin the paper clip around it.

Time to play! Have your child spin the paper clip to land on a sense.

Explore an object with the sense the spinner lands on. Be sure to only taste things that are safe to eat!

Ask your child to describe the object as they explore it with their senses. Then, ask them to guess what it is!

Take turns spinning and exploring!

Once all the objects have been discovered, sort the objects by sense! Spin the spinner again. When the spinner stops at one of the senses, find the objects that are best explored using that sense. For example, shampoo might be best explored through smell. Most objects will connect with multiple senses, so make a choice that fits best.
Spin again and continue until all the objects are sorted. Talk to your child about what they noticed. What surprised your child?
We hope you had fun together! Snap a photo of you and your child doing the activity and share it with us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. We’d love to see how it turned out!
