It's 1647. England is plagued by, well, not plague, but puritans like Gabriel Bannister, a small-time witchfinder who dreams of being one of the big boys. And now he's got his chance - an untimely death means there's an opening at the top. All he has to do is transport unruly witch suspect Thomasine Gooch to trial. The trouble is she's the worst travelling companion in all the land.
