It's the 2002 triple-A girls basketball championship featuring the North East Raiders and swings burrow Tigers.
And good afternoon, everybody, and welcome to Championship Weekend day two.
I'm Jim Tanaka along with Paula, Gwen Grant, and we bring you the triple-A championship and begins with a team that likes to run Paula the Raider Reds, and that's led by a young lady named Lakeisha James.
And she is so awesome.
They're top scorer, in fact.
I mean, she plays hard, she plays tough, and she is a defender that really gets in there.
And she doesn't I mean, she is scrappy.
She gets in there and really gives it up.
She doesn't mind averaging about 17 points a game and she's really here to play today.
That's the story on location now.
Another girl to watch throughout today's broadcast.
Is this young lady a caring.
That's right.
Now, I tell you, together with Lakeisha James, I mean, she is just a fact really effective in her game.
She comes through in a crunch top one of the another top scorers on the team, and they are here to play today and they are very physical in the game and they love to run it through.
So watch out for that.
So those are the two, the key girls to watch today.
Now, of course, the the starting five for the northeast Raiders, great threats that like to run a good team.
Of course we've covered Carrington and James and here's the rest of the starting five right there.
Monique Sanford of Florida 511 junior she's effective can get into foul trouble at points.
We also have the key thing, Howard and again we mentioned she Carrington Lakisha James and then we have plane also there in the guard position a five to senior and it's going to be really a really good game today.
Now of course you see Waynesboro here and of course the key players today, Shayla, Roberts, Shayla I tell you now, last season, she can a lot of times put in those last points in a game.
She averages about 22 points, seven rebounds.
I mean, this girl is really going to be something today and she really is part of a12 punch with another star player on the team.
But Shayla Roberts is going to really get in there.
This is who she works well with, Nicki Robinson.
She's just got a tough interior presence.
I mean, 19 points a game works really well with Shayla Roberts kind of giving a12 punch.
Exactly.
So it's the that Lady Tigers.
And of course, here as here are the starting five for them.
Yes.
And so a forward a 511 guard.
It's going to be a real great game.
You got 510 junior Miss Maria branch.
And then you also have Marissa Salisbury and Nikki Robinson.
And then also in position is Kenya McNair and of course, Shayla Roberts.
So this plans to be a really good game, I think, today.
So it's Waynesboro and Northeast here in the triple-A championship, and we have some great coaches out there today as well for both teams.
A good story on the northeast side is a gentleman that's coached this team for 30 years.
Can you believe that?
I mean, that's not easy.
And that's of course, I'm talking about Alvin Copeland.
Alvin Copeland, and I mean, 30 years of having a really great time and really delivering.
I mean, Coach Copeland has really been effective with his girls, and I know they listen heartily to his advice because he's been here before in years past and he's brought them here today.
And on the other side for Waynesboro, the head coach, Bobby Andrews.
Bobby Andrews.
Bobby Andrews has been out coaching for quite a while, too, and I know his girls are listening to him and coach.
Yeah, he's coaching a really tough game for them because they're new here.
So Waynesboro is it was really kind of walking into new territory.
So I mean, everybody's really geared up today.
But as Gainesville found out in the semifinals against Northeast, the Raider, that's definitely like to run.
So this could be a fast paced game.
I think so.
And I'll be nice to see.
I think when our folks watch girls basketball, sometimes the expectation isn't there for necessarily a fast paced game.
And I think that's going to be a nice flavor to this particular game today.
All right.
We're just about ready for the introductions of all the players that will participate in today's triple-A championship.
So without further ado, we'll turn it over to public address ANNOUNCER Eddie Ashley.
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.
Welcome to Macon, Georgia, and the Georgia High School Association class triple-A Girls State Championship.
And this afternoon's game, we have the Northeast right here at with the record of 28 wins and three losses dressed in red as your visitors on the scoreboard and the Swain Boro Tigers with the record of 30 wins and two losses as your home team now have your attention for the starting lineup.
First for Northeast at forward number 31, a five foot 11 junior motif.
Sanford bus, Waynesboro at forward number 44, five foot ten.
Junior Forrest Salisbury North end at forward number 12, a five foot ten southpaw to keep the Howard fourth place Boro at forward number 52, a five foot nine junior, Mario Bryan for Northeast at center number 25, a six foot senior, C.R.
Carrington first playing Boro at center number 30, a six foot two senior Nicky Robinson for northeast at guards number 14, a five foot two senior Carman Kevin Force Waynesburg, guard number 22 at five foot six senior video near Northeast at guard number 23, a five foot eight junior.
Look, he's sharp.
James for slate for a guard number 32, a five foot seven junior.
Shiloh Roberts and Northeastern's coach by coach Calvin Copeland.
Waynesboro is coached by Coach Bobby Andrews.
So there you have it.
The triple-A championship ready to go northeast and swings.
But we'll have these messages in a word from TV.
TV funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following You're watching the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships on TBS.
And welcome back to Macon.
We're ready for the triple-A championship.
Let's go to the sidelines and Cindy Beaumont.
Hello, Cindy.
Thank you, Jim.
You were just talking about these coaches earlier on, and I have another interesting tidbit for you.
They were fraternity brothers in college.
Go figure.
So it's not surprising that their teams and their coaching styles are very similar.
They each come out strong in the second half and each of these guys know how to push the right buttons and talk to their girls to get them fired up for the second half.
Northeast has already come back twice in this tournament.
The lady Tigers might be looking for revenge.
They were bested by the Raider rats last year in the quarter finals.
So look for a lot of action, a lot of scoring in the second half of this game.
Jim, I thank Cindy.
And boy, I'll tell you what, Paula, so the coaches know each other even better than we thought.
Oh, yeah.
And of course, that's going to reflect in their teams.
And so this is going to be an interesting matchup as we get started a day.
All right.
So Swain's girls in the white uniforms moving from left to right in the screen and of course, northeast from right to left in the red uniforms as we're underway for a championship game here from the Coliseum.
Good ball movement by strange ball here in the early going as they look for an open man.
That's Nicky Robinson looking to get rid of it there tied up pretty good there Northeast is all over and a loose ball down down low there and taken away by Carrington And here come the rate of Rex.
Remember they like to run so you will not see them set up an offense to too many times.
And the shot off the mark by Howard and Howard gets the rebound.
Northeast will regroup and a shot off the mark by center partially blocked.
And here comes Waynesboro.
That's Roberts acolytes in the theater with the earth in traffic gets the shot up and off the mark and a loose ball foul underneath.
Everybody's getting their legs up under him here at the beginning of the game, feeling each other out, trying to develop a pace for him and the foul goes against Twinsburg.
So here come the radar at that's Carroll Lewis with the ball.
Here are your officials for today's game, Larry Charles, Kevin Brooks and Tim Smith.
And we have another whistle, I guess, version one third and the first personal for Nicky Robinson of Waynesboro off the inbounds northeast keeps it nice drive on the baseline by Sanford but she couldn't connect on the shot And here comes Waynesboro off the break and good defensive play down the other end Nicky Robinson already with her first foul and she has a trouble has a tendency to get into foul trouble sensor coaches watching out for that today is Nicky Double team Double team now a lot of traffic here.
Yes, indeed fans going really trying to find a way to set up and it's tough.
Northeast has got Salisbury.
This is off and we have whistles Robinson gets the ball he there you see Nicky Robinson, one of the star players for the lady Tigers.
She is one of their top scorers and she's really tough.
She's not afraid to get in there and get physical if she has to.
And of course, head coach Bobby Andrews and Robinson misses the short jumpers now a turnover and here come the Tigers again.
Roberts down low Robinson has an excellent play really good basketball now they starting to feel that energy and Swain's burrow on the board first leads you to nothing and down low and Robinson comes up with a big block on the keeper Howard and the great threat to inbound There we go.
You get it out to Howard That's Evans and down low We have a whistle down low as Lakeisha James tried to drive baseline was okay.
Something she had to do is gave it a shot so now they're in fact giving each other directions.
Now how to get set for this next play and really get themselves well situated.
Thousand number 32 Charlotte Roberts her first personal down low the jumper off the mark by Carrington Good attempt to score And here comes Waynesboro.
It's interesting to watch personalities of these teams because you do see a whole lot of similarities.
So it's so true that the coaches have really influenced them and we got to see it in even a very even matchup.
McNair from the corner off the mark Nicky Robinson rebound Nice shot by Robinson.
Good teamwork Real good teamwork and almost an instant steal there Shot off the mark Rebound down below Nice pass out He's excellent That's how you really work together Assisted getting it done getting it done Evans quickly with the two pointer down the other end it's Shayla Roberts she maneuvered right through there Well done.
All of a sudden the pace has picked up here a little bit.
Really nice.
Nice drive down the middle.
We have a whistle as Clement Evans drove the lane.
It's good to see all the people out here today.
You know, a lot of times you see such a big turn out for boys basketball games.
It is terrific interest in the girls today.
I love to see that.
Fouls on Killian McNair force Waynesboro at the line as coming ever you her number three and in the game for Swain's burrows Kelly Johnson she replaces Maria branch block up and the free throws are good so it's six four now in favor of Swing Girl.
I love the way Carmen Evans took her time with those free throws.
I think that made a big difference.
LA Times is a lot of rushing going on there.
Well done.
That's Roberts.
Come to feed off the mark and rebound down low loose ball out of bounds And who are they going to give it to here And it looks like Swain's girl will keep it.
Roberts two inbound for Waynesboro tries to get it down low to Mikki Robinson and she's tripped up down the other end.
There's a turnover and swings.
Girl has it right back Oh the other way with so I think so here's Roberts shifting from right to left in and misses the layup and here come the stretch they're looking to run it now this is Evans close it down just a bit Cross-court pass reading her for it is excellent nice pass down low good foul inside Howard and we're tied at six That's what they do well following through try to complete the play brother Now here's that pressure that northeast is known for since they have so much speed and a lot of teams that is so intimidating and doesn't even allow them to get a shot off which of course is the goal.
Robinson shot off the mark northeast on the run down low.
This is Howard.
Howard So northeast with their first lead of the game it's eight six redirects three corner pressure from northeast has really changed the game for Plainsboro on offense Robinson tried to get the pass it's intercepted great defensive play she had Carrington down the other end It's power to Evans she stops and pops off the mark Rebound Carrington stolen away by Robinson And here come the Tigers Here's Roberts Roberts jumper off the mark and back come the redress And that pass is a little too long and the Tigers will take over again.
End to end action ball.
I mean, this action is intense but they came to play and there no northeast zone in particular for bringing that energy to the court on those runs.
And so we're seeing that already here in this first quarter, which is really exciting.
Ernie, just 222 left in the first quarter.
It's just gone by so quickly, mainly because of the energy these these three quarter pressure from northeast as they look to break the press right in the aggressively seated, forcing to turn it over again, no turnovers, Mr. Real hard thing to swallow later on in the games.
This is where you want to really collect yourself and focus as Waynesboro turns it over than northeast turns Yeah the Tigers have it back.
Here we go again and you see the pressure put on by northeast.
2 minutes to go.
First quarter.
Roberts doesn't get it out to McNair.
A quick defensive play by the right aggressor all over it in the possession arrow points towards northeast so northeast will get the ball great reds are not afraid to get in there and defend that ball.
I love that.
You have to have that kind of guts.
You have to have that kind of strength on the court.
Northeast calls timeout with 147 to go here in the first quarter.
Wow.
That went fast, didn't it?
And I love when teams come with energy and they come with the intensity to play.
And this is the plays and of course, the game to do that because this is where it's all for the the ultimate here and today we see northeast not afraid.
In fact the swing girl coach at coach Bobby Andrews, you know for two years as Waynesboro he brings a lot of experience.
One 3581 What a record that is.
And of course, there you see Alvin Copeland, fraternity brother, returning for me.
Come on, How do you do that?
But look at that record.
I mean, 30 years, 663 wins.
I mean, the man definitely knows what he's doing.
And I'm sure that his team's going to be showing us a little of that today.
All right.
Off the inbound, here comes Northeast 145 to go in the first quarter.
They lead it eight six on the weak side.
Got the layup this miss down low and now put back Denver put back Good play by Phil Carrington that pressure is really low Has Swain's Burrow's offense confused at the moment yes that really threw them right there and that quickness will do that.
So you have to really focus and watch watch the floor, which is not always easy to do when you have a team moving as quickly as northeast through the range.
Let's do and they inbound the ball, get it into the corner.
That's Roberts back outside the press stolen away.
This is going to be an easy layup.
That's a gift right there because that was again and northeast is now on a ten nothing run.
12, six northeast.
Whoa.
And full court pressure has really turned things around.
That full court pressure, well will again intimidate many teams.
And I think swing score is trying to collect themselves and figure out how they're going to deal with that.
There's that steal again.
There's a special James again, a gift.
This is back to live action.
We have a whistle underneath.
Big time battles under the boards.
Oh, yeah.
Well, you know, I admire them for getting in there and doing that.
But what's interesting, you have different sized matches that match ups with these two teams.
And so, again, they're not afraid to defend or play that offense at under a minute to go first quarter triple A championship from making McNair a good ball movement down low excellent French excellent they stayed with that ball knew that they had time to really work it out and ended up in scored the basketball Maria branch scores the hoop and draws the foul and misses the free throw.
Nicky Robinson underneath and they call it jump ball possession arrow goes to north northeast Gravity Northeast ball.
So now Lanesborough with all four court pressure of their own here, I'm ready to read in the final minute.
James drives the lane, loses the ball and it's lost touch by Waynesboro.
So the winner will keep off the inbounds Great passed in to keep the house stolen by Jackie Robinson as he's going to go the length of the floor.
Very nice.
Very nice.
Nicky Robinson She has no fear.
You've got to love that.
Northeast leads 1210.
We count it down.
Coming up on 10 seconds to go.
First quarter, they swing it down low.
Carrington Northeast is in it to play the intensity shot here at the end of the first quarter and that's the end of your first quarter with your score north east 14 Waynesboro ten.
We'll have the second quarter for you after these messages.
In a word from Deep 80 funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following You're watching TV bringing you the best.
You're watching the USA Boys and Girls basketball championships on TV.
And welcome back to your championship weekend here on TV.
It's the girls triple-A title game between Northeast and Waynesboro one quarter in the books.
And as you see, Northeast leads it 14 to 10.
And the radar rats are very happy over there.
The cheerleaders.
Oh, yeah.
CHEERING on their team.
It's all right.
Let's go down courtside to city.
Beaumont City.
What's got?
Yeah, Jim, Bobby Andrews was just talking to his girls, telling him to keep an eye out for that 2 to 1 trademark full court press by the Northeast girls saying keep an eye on that middle girl and keep on pressing.
They can do it.
Thank you, Cindy.
Drive in the lane where Swain's girl is McNair.
She misses the shot.
Here.
Come the rain wrecks.
There's that pressure again, calling pressure, trying to find an open man.
With all of that there, your face.
What she did well to get it, get the ball.
Past law.
That's Carrington trying to find an open man up a dribble, almost a three second call that almost Stanford drives.
Nice pass to the weak side.
And that's the key here, Howard.
And she'll go to the line.
It's Waynesboro.
Definitely is her the coach out?
Put it right into action.
There it is again.
Here's the great pass and Howard Tubbs drive.
There you see Howard's numbers, eight points.
A game on the season 140 ten Northeast at 12 points in the semis against Gainesville.
Of course, Gainesville beat them in the championship last year.
Yes, he did.
That was really quite interesting this time around to watch that one.
Now, Swain's girls to try and break that full court pressure again, Nicki Robertson, trying to get a loose ball for Strange Girl goes out of bounds off the radar, Red.
So the Lady Tigers will keep it.
They try to thrive.
So off the inbounds Salisbury, they work it around the corner, back up to the top.
That's McNair.
McNair drives, stops, passes right side.
That's Robert off the mark Roberts gets the loose ball drives baseline.
Jaylen Roberts Yes.
Excellent, excellent determination because she tried for that three pointer but then she decides to really drive it in and see what I can do.
And she draws the foul right here.
Nice play by show.
Excellent.
So Roberts completes the three point play and makes her free throws.
And it's 1513 Northeast.
All the full court pressure.
Oh, Howard down low finds Jill Carrington Carrington puts it in excellent teamwork there that took everybody coming together because they were really Oh nice steal by Stanford.
But she can't convert and back the other way.
All the tigers to cross-court pass they work it around This is Roberts back outside McNair from three point win yes there he lays McNair hits the three pointer and it's 1716 There you see that three point goal again that was a beautiful, beautiful back there.
Nothing but net.
Nothing but net.
Here's Nicky Robinson High post.
Look for an open man.
She traveled.
Oh, while she was trying to read the floor.
A lot of times you forget yourself.
And I think that was just the instance.
Smokey Robinson.
So back come the rhetoric here.
Your turnover so far, a lot of turnovers for the early part of the game.
This is a high, high paced game like this back and forth.
You can expect that, though.
You do.
You have to expect a lot of turnovers and those turnovers and cost some points.
I'm sure the coaches will speak to that and they probably already have at the end of the first quarter in the game for Strange Pro is Terrell Lewis.
This is Evans Drive stops he finds an open hand they try to get down low to Carrington and they have a whistle and this one's going to go against northeast out of bounds so Swain's bell takes over.
That was tough to complete because she's been double team.
But it was a good attempt at it.
Bring it across the time line.
No problem.
Nicki Robinson to the free throw line off the mark gets her own rebound, turns around, has no shot back outside Roberts Roberts stops and pops off the mark.
Loose ball underneath and it goes out of bounds.
And the interesting to say which way to call this one.
Yeah I'm curious to hear this one.
It's going to go to Swain's Greensboro.
What a battle underneath.
That's all right there.
Here to tough it out and not afraid.
That's Salisbury.
They work it around Taylor Roberts for three and she throws it up from long distance and then tell you you have to hit a number of those in practice, Louisville to get them that well in the game.
That's excellent.
And we have a whistle underneath in the transition game.
About 5 minutes to go until halftime shift.
Carrington will go to the line and she'll get another in the game for northeast is more teak Sanford and she replaces number 22 Sharonda Brooks and she had the winning shot against Gainesville in the semis.
And that was a really tough game for them because Gainesville, of course, being on top all season and she did score that winning game point.
It was so exciting, the point that they run against Gainesville in the center.
Sidney Robertson takes it Yeah, low Nicki Robinson.
She's out there to score and spur her team on and it is really working today.
Evans Evans putting on a dribbling clinic, ball gown, loose ball, Salisbury picks up the loose ball and here comes Range curl, four and a half to go till the first half.
And there's another long jumper from Roberts.
Beautiful, beautiful.
Roberts is on fire.
She is definitely hot.
They are getting the ball to Roberson with the interception double teamed in the back court Here comes Swain's curl which is so long every time we see a great play for the Northeast, Westbrook comes right behind me.
Something else gets their match to intensity.
They both want it bad today.
ROBERTS To McMillan, a corner back out to Roberts.
He's feeling the hot hand, that's for sure.
And he is fouled by number 23.
That's Lakeisha James Nicki Robinson takes a break for Swain's girl in the game.
Is William Grant down low.
Here's Grant and a loose ball down at Salisbury and Salisbury is fouled down.
They try to get it up.
They're given points for at least trying to make that play happen.
Here it is again.
Look at Salisbury battling right in there, Red shirts all around.
He's like, okay, from Arizona, Salisbury hits the first free throw one and it's 2419 and she hits the bone.
She is six for Waynesboro, 2519.
Howard tries to get out of traffic, gets it back to Evans, guarded tightly by Charlotte Roberts.
There's a floor chance to set up time to make that play happen.
This is Howard on the drive and they say basket case it went and we have a foul and this one is going to go against Miriam Grant Strange girl number 5251 again, Nicky Robinson checks right back into the ball game for Waynesboro.
I'm also in the game for Northeast.
There's number 20 shooting Houston.
She replaces number 25 for Northeast that she apparently checked out Adrian Collier for northeastern southern games Waynesboro off the break and Roberts tries to back off the glass and she's fouled by Carman Evans as we getting close to the end of this first half here and a lot of fouls being called quite a few players and that's the catch it can happen before a half and of course having to be conservative in this first half, as you got a second half you have to deal with and of course is crucial.
Get those points up.
Well, hopefully not getting into too much foul trouble.
And Roberts makes the first of two free throws.
She sure does.
She's very disciplined in this area.
Excellent.
And it's 27, 19 Waynesboro.
That's their biggest lead of the game.
Whoa, Check out that pass.
She figure I'm almost out of bounds and iso toss it back in their power Cross-court pass to Evans Evans drives takes it off the glass off the mark and a loose ball down low And this one's going to go against the writer at on and the foul is on Sharonda Brooks number 22 and looks like they're over the limit So Swain's girl go to the line but this will be a one and one and Sharonda Brooks check that McNair hits the free throw.
You see McNair's numbers.
Obviously, she had a very good season like that.
She's strong and support needs up to 10% range for a 2919.
Both teams pressuring on defense.
Strange.
There you see Waynesboro is now on a ten nothing run the last 2 minutes.
First it was north Hayes now swing the swings Where is taking the run actually powerful is really help them and a good hook there by Boteach Sanford cut that lead down to eight 2921 two and a half to go till halftime Oh good ball movement there's Robinson thank you for four Roberts Roberts thinks about the three decides not to pick there guarded tightly by Evans back out to Roberts Roberts looks to drive the lane stop passes right side has a move and there's a whistle as Kelly Johnson Northeastern ease up they make sure they're in their phase and forcing them to make some kind of move.
Here it is again good defense by northeast Zach Johnson go to the hoop there.
They basically decided to double team and that has been very, very good for them today.
There's Kelly Johnson and the first free throw is good transparent a hole is very disciplined in their shots.
Coach Andrews makes sure that team is actually actually very technical sound and the second also good executing very well free throws are just as important.
Rob Oh sure, you can blow a lot of valuable points when not making your free throw.
So, so important to be disciplined in those areas like free throws and rebound.
It could make the difference in the game as well as a three point shot redirects.
Move it around low couple of cross court passes here early going Howard back outside this is James driving the lane and it goes off her foot and out of bounds.
Got to keep control of the ball even though we get it you know good energy flow going down and she's gained control of your ball because it can cost you as it did in that instance drains Waynesboro breaks the full court pressure this is Roberts going down low and take it away by the writer at Latisha James looks to set it up for Northeast off to the right wing.
This is Sanford and a little off the mark, almost.
Here comes Waynesboro, triple team, triple team to match points.
And they did not want her to go anywhere down low.
Robinson misses the layup underneath Johnson fight for it and Kelly Johnson will go to the line.
Wow I tell you, it's intensity every day and it's such good thing.
It's making for a great game to watch.
Look at Johnson.
Look at that.
Battling against two Raider sets their double team in and triple teaming in some incidences.
So this is this is great to see teams tough it out try one more times and maybe this one to be heard.
Stanley Johnson having a great game for it sometimes.
The second try is the magical one.
Now the lead.
11 3221 Waynesboro one minute to go in the second quarter Northeast, you start to get as many points on the board as they can before the half to close that gap.
Where does it look like it'll happen tonight?
James shot was off Motueka central with the rebound and put back and she's fouled in these next 50 seconds little concentration needed here little more focus but stuff you know both a lot of pressure here a lot of pressure both teams running up and down the floor in the early going championship making coliseum.
You know it's just it's a lot even for Team Sanford, who's a very strong player and has handled much pressure before.
It's still different when you get down to the state championship game a lot of times and that could very well and probably will change in the second half.
And northeast will take over on offense.
This is Evans, 40 seconds to go first quarter down and read the court Lakeisha James tries to go to the corner cannot back outside this is Evans James top of the key Howard off the mark out of bounds and it looks like northeast will keep it Swain's goal was really trying to force and now they're talking it over Yeah they took the bait there huh?
Yeah.
So takes over.
Waynesboro gets that way and they might play for the last shot with 25 seconds left and a 11 point lead.
3221 McNair gets it in the corner to Grant Branch down low to Johnson, and it goes out of bounds.
So 11 seconds to go.
Be interesting to see what they do these this both coaches shouting directions to teams and so everybody is trying to collect and make the most of these last 11 seconds before the half counted down 4 seconds to one and that's your halftime score.
So there you have it, 30 to 21.
It's northeastern swings burrow and the triple A championship game halftime here at the Macon Coliseum in a up and down ballgame fast paced.
Let's go to sleep.
Hi.
Thanks Jim.
I'm here with Bobby Andrews.
Obviously, you got a big fat 11 point lead.
What do you think your girls are doing right?
What do you think they're doing wrong?
Oh, we got to handle the press a little bit better that we're handling it right now on the press ahead of early, unfortunately, getting some easy basket down out the press.
Once we settled down and made a couple of baskets, all we need to do was held a press early and they killing us backside.
We got to go with him at the Jets man on that for the big girls down inside of the net.
We should be all right.
Come back out the second half.
Well, Nicky Sailor really seem to be pulling their weight.
Are they doing everything you expected them to do?
And in much more?
Yes, they are pulling away.
We made a couple of turnovers early, Nick, and missed a couple of layups early, but we're going to step up and play the second half and we want to finish this thing up.
Here we go.
Good luck to you, coach.
All right.
Thank you.
That's Coach Andrews, our halftime scores, Waynesburg, 32, Northeast 21.
We'll be back with more after this.
Funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided part by the following You're watching the U.S.A.
Boys and Girls Basketball Championships on TBS.
And welcome back to the Macon Coliseum.
Halftime Strange barrel, aged 32, 21 over northeast.
Now let's turn it over to Cindy Beaumont.
Cindy.
Thank you, Jim.
I'm here flanked by the principals of both schools, and I'm not even in trouble.
Go figure.
I've got Ella Carter here from northeast.
Ella, tell me about what this has meant to your.
It's been a great first half so far.
It is a great first half.
We're not worried about anything.
We've got a good team.
And above all, they are well coached well, and that's exactly right.
You've got a coach that has been around for 30 years.
What does that meant to your school and to the team?
The record speaks for itself.
He's a legend in this county and everybody knows it, and the best team will win.
Well, we have no doubt about that.
At any rate, how is the school rally, these girls being in the state finals like we've come a long way with them over to Augusta?
Hey, this is our game and we're looking forward to taking in the gold.
Okay.
Very good.
Thank you, Ella.
And over here, we have Von Johnson.
He's with Waynesboro.
Von, thanks for being here.
This your first time?
Swain Swings Pro girls have been at the state finals.
What's that mean to your school?
This is the first time since 1959, and we're just tickled to be here.
We're playing a great team, a well coached team, and it's been an exciting first half, and we're up by a few, but we've got two more quarters to play.
That's right.
It's not over till it's over.
Now, I understand you have a deacon and two ministers on the coaching staff of your team.
Are you hoping that's going to come in handy?
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
Very good.
And how is it how is your school and your community rallied behind your team?
We've got a great crowd from Waynesboro.
We know all the folks back home hopefully are watching TV and everybody's behind us.
And we've even got the oldest living tiger with us here today.
And what's her name?
This is Miss Judy Bennett, our media specialist.
Very good.
Nice to meet you, Judy.
How does it feel to be here today?
It's great to be in the finals.
I've waited about 35 years for this.
When we got beat out in 1967 when I played.
Well, good.
I'm glad you could be here for it.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Excellent.
Well, thank you, coaches, for being around today.
Read that, too.
I'm probably the oldest principal in this county.
43 year old.
Well, that deserves it.
Congratulations.
You got this time last year with that basketball team.
Yes, you were.
That's right.
So you're out for a little bit of revenge yourself.
Well, good luck to you guys.
I wish you all the best.
Thanks.
But back to you and Jim Paul.
All right, Cindy, thanks very much.
You know, it's interesting, you know, the communities, the way they get together and root for their teams is just incredible.
But, you know, it's also a really good thing to hear principals lead in that way with the school spirit because they are proud, not only the coaching staff, but, you know, they're proud of the fact that the history of the schools, it's brought them to the current day.
And they're hoping that this current day affects generations to come.
And it's true because it spills over like that.
Good or bad, no matter what the outcome is, is that you made it to this stage.
And that is not an easy thing.
I mean, there are plenty of teams watching you today who are taking notes, so they hopefully next year, they're the two teams here and the two teams here have had an impressive first half with some stats to show you.
Yes, we do.
As to what both teams did in the first half.
And there you have the numbers right there.
Field goals, Waynesboro, 12 of 27, Northeast eight of 24.
Yeah.
And free throws.
Everybody's their free throw.
But the big number I think is the turnovers.
Look at the turnovers.
I mean you know it's Waynesboro with 11 and you got Northeast with ten.
It's like, all right.
The rebounds actually perfectly matched with rebounds in 16.
But those turnovers, you really have to watch those.
And with the pace again of this game, that's why, again, you see those kind of numbers.
That's great.
And we also have first half highlights to show you between Waynesboro and Northeast.
So here we go.
First half action, Northeast on the run and this is a quick bucket by Nikita Howard underneath and a lot of double teaming.
Both teams were prepared for the star players in top.
Nicky Robinson, one of those star players who will get that scoring and she has been effective the entire season with just those kinds of plays.
And then a great defensive play right here by Lakeisha James, and she takes it the length of the floor and they're not afraid to do that in Northeast, you know, they'll make a run and end up on a score.
And then the hot hand from Robert Charlotte Roberts Shayla Roberts has really come with it today, and she's really become very hot as the game has progressed.
And I think in the second half, remember, both of these teams come out strong in the second half.
So the intensity is not going to waver and it's going to take a little dip, as we often see in the third quarter of most basketball games.
I think we're going to see heat in the third quarter and who knows how we'll finish and we're looking forward to that third quarter.
We'll have it for you coming up next right here on TV, funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following You're watching member supported TV, your PBS station bringing you the best.
You're watching the U.S.A.
Boys and Girls Basketball Championships on TV.
And welcome back to the Macon Coliseum.
It's the girls triple-A championships.
Waynesboro leads it at halftime 3221 over Northeast, and now let's go downstairs and Cindy Beaumont.
CINDY Thank you, Jim.
I'm here with Alvin Copeland.
Alvin, what did you tell your girls over the break?
You're a little bit behind.
Well, I told them we've got to play a lot better defense than what we're playing right now.
And we're not boxing out so that we can get rebounds.
And the the thing that we've got to do, we've got to squeeze the shots and we haven't been doing that.
Do you think nerves have been on the big top here?
Are playing a factor?
Well, I don't know.
We've played here before and and the other people, they have not played here just like we have not played here.
So it's all even that's not a problem now.
Okay.
Thank you very much, Coach.
Good luck to you.
You're all right.
Thank you, Cindy.
As we get ready for the third quarter and you got a feeling that, you know, being at the same school for 30 years, he's got to have something planned.
Paul.
Oh, he's got something planned.
Don't you worry.
He's got something planned.
And it's about to be revealed right here, right now.
So I'm not worried that Coach Copeland doesn't know what the plan is for the second half.
All right.
Redirects the inbound here.
We guys, we begin the second half of action in the triple-A championship from Macon.
There's your leading scorers for Northeast Carrington leads it with ten, Howard with five and three other players with a bucket who again see a Carrington coming through for her team.
And here comes Waynesboro off the break.
And Charlotte Roberts had trouble stopping in the lane and she's called for the offensive foul.
Yeah, and foul trouble is what we really have to be careful of here, because we don't want to get down to those last minutes in the fourth, and we got faults and foul trouble.
That's Roberts third personal.
So that's really key for Waynesboro, I would imagine culturally taking her out of the game sometime soon just to be ready for this ball fouls called down the other end and this one's going to go against number 44 Swain's girl.
That's Marissa Salisbury.
And there's your leading scorers for Waynesboro Roberts Major with 13.
But again, she just picked up her third personal Robinson with eight and McNair with five.
Exactly.
Here's Nicky Robinson stops and pops and ten off the mark Robinson with a rebound underneath and there's some serious traffic down He's going to say I don't think she's getting out of that one.
That was really sad.
But again, it shows you that they're prepared, shows you that they received Northeast in particular.
This instance knows how to go after.
And there you see her trying to get away, but comes right back and puts it home.
Sorry, man.
Those is live action.
And it's 3420 Swain's girl intercepted by Robinson Nicky right now is all over the place.
Nicky Ross second half.
She's a tough defender.
She's not going to let you have a moment's rest.
Here's Roberts working off the pick by Robinson.
Roberts stops and pop off the mark.
The rebound down low Salisbury double team tied up and a jump ball.
And the ball will go over to Northeast with the possession arrow pointing their way.
Let's see what how this goes down If it get something else going to play in the third quarter, you knew it would be this way.
Those are your predictions from your coaches.
Terry Lewis gets it up into the forecourt, almost stolen there and we have a whistle and the foul and the foul is on Nicky Robinson for Swain's curled pass down low intercepted by Salisbury one have Swain's girl tries to break what looks like a three point pressure Here's Roberts back outside McNair McNair looks three steady and gives to Roberts Here's Roberts works off the pick by Robinson double team turns around jump shot good single Roberts took her time with that one took the time she needed and Coach Andrews was out now to the floor.
Take time, set it up and they did it.
Here's Roberts off the break again.
Look up court as Nicky Robinson Robinson in transition stops back down to Roberts He thinks about the three then says let me regrouping Yeah let's take a second set the floor think about where we're going here Roberts Pass Intercepted here come the stretch all the way down the floor.
STAFFORD And she scores the easy hoop.
Well done.
That is nice motif SANFORD And it's 3623 Waynesboro good defensive pressure by northeast here's Roberts she drives the lane and we have a whistle and this one from this one will go against Carmen Evans and that's her third personal for northeast getting close here.
I would imagine a circus using substitutions happened here just so that you can have teams ready for the fourth quarter with their strongest players.
And that tends to be the case on both teams.
You know, players that play so hard, you have a tendency you really get those fouls.
So.
Evans the 3000 Northeast Roberts with three fouls for the Tigers 527 to go third quarter it.
Evans to bring it up this is Leticia James Long Cross Park pass intercepted by Nicky Robinson Here comes Robinson in transition looking for an open man Oh ball's tipped by Sanford on defense out of Robinson's hands and northeast will take over there you see that was Letitia James McKissic gives it back to Evans to bring it across the time line.
Now back to James.
James double teamed in the fourth court.
Tough.
They're making it tough little table is really in their face.
Northeast has to really rethink the game plan it is always there the steal is really tough.
So you got two teams coming here, too, that's going.
And that is what Coach Bobby Andrews wanted his team to come win, get in their faces, really make them rethink their game plan.
That's a third personal foul against Kelly Johnson.
In the meantime, the redirects put one home at she a Carrington and a steal down low but no help from no Now the rest of the way Rich Carmen Evans had a steal down there Here's Waynesboro in transition down the other end and we have a jump ball possession arrow points towards northeast.
So here we go with that end in action again, Paul, I mean, it's really it's incredible.
They got an intensity going here.
And as coach Alvin Copeland told his team, don't miss on those easy shots and they're making it.
They're trying to make sure that they make all the shots they set up here today.

All right let's listen to coach Copeland.
Hey, man you right here.
That's motion right here.
Go away from this park and come.
Okay?
If you don't get the ball screen away right here, let this girl come.
Got it.
All right, let's go.
We got.
All right, we can get back.
Go.
Let's go.
All right.
He designed a play and they're coming back.
And they understood every line of that, too.
Did you catch all those he drew here and here?
And then you just go over here.
You do that.
You got it.
Good.
Great.
All right, great.
You know, I noticed Cindy Bowman was listening to and yeah, I think she got that play.
Oh, I'm almost sure she did.
Yes, she did give the thumbs up for her.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Come there.
And Rex, that's Sanford back outside.
Letitia James.
Here's Sanford in the corner.
Drives, baseline stops.
It got short and Nicky Robinson gets the rebound for Waynesboro Roberts tries to save it before going out of bounds.
They say she was out of bounds so northeast will take northeast gets a chance.
Those are the easy shots, though that Coach Copeland was talking about could have made that one a little more focus and concentration needed for here for northeast to get some points on the board Evans inbounds to James down low she goes to Carrington for the quick Yes she a Carrington she a Carrington now got it She's like okay, I had to find it.
I had to find it.
3627 Now, Swain's Waynesboro, the lead is down to nine as coach Bobby Andrews substitutions in the game.
Sharonda Brooks in the game.
Number 22.
Replacement number 14.
Carmen Evans for northeast Here's Roberts to bring the ball up now passes off to Johnson back to Roberts as they look to break the pressure put on by the redirect Salisbury in the corner tied up by two northeast players and with the jump ball the possession.
Now it goes to Swain's girl that was going to because you had you had a couple of players left open there.
So you have to really watch out.
It's going to end up last round.
40 seconds.
There you see northeast on a six nothing run as we said, Coach Kirkland had something up his sleeve down the lane.
She goes, Tina McNair and it's 3827 Waynesboro, Waynesboro, putting on some good defensive pressure down low.
CARRINGTON Yes, wonderfully.
Here you go.
Now, you put points on the board.
Teamwork.
Well, Carrington, with some big plays down low, but northeast on the last couple of trips down the floor.
No question she's really put into the game some real intensity that her teammates are feeding off of.
And as Green points to them now as their collective thoughts and follow through on the plays, Phil Copeland's laying out for the inbounds goes to Mikki Robinson.
Back to Roberts.
Here's Roberts.
She crosses the time line.
ROBERTS trying to set up a play for Waynesboro.
So far, no set yet.
A lot of uncertainty.
McNair tries to get to Salisbury.
She's in the corner double team.
That was a tough game.
And the ball will be turned over to Northeast.
Good defensive pressure by the Raider ex.
Excellent.
They couldn't explain or couldn't figure out how to set a play due to that defensive pressure.
And that's what really needed there.
Stanford drives the lane and a what a play by Robinson look BLOCK And there's a jump ball possession now goes to northeast and so far there's the turnover 15 turnovers 11 for northeast, 26 turnovers in a game that has end to end.
I mean, it really has that comes Waynesboro.
This is Roberts guarded tightly by James Taylor Roberts to Nicky Robinson Robinson Oh Salisbury in the corner back out to Roberts Roberts all over the course Double down that double team.
Dorothy's just really in their faces.
Coach Bobby Andrews saw that Roberts was tied up, and so he said, Let's take a break.
Break.
And Roberts said, Yeah, okay, thanks.
Save me.
I need saving.
This will be a good time.
Call the time out.
You've got three 3829 Waynesboro in the girls triple A championship from the Macon Coliseum on the Prairie.
Coming up, it's the four girls championship.
Glen Hills taking on Hephzibah at 1:45 p.m.. That's what you got to do.
Definitely another big game.
And then I to see it we've got another one the boys play for a championship Westlake and Creekside and the games continue to roll on prime time tonight Middle Creek takes on Collins Hill the girls five eight championship and then it's the boys five eight championship Lakeside and Wheeler beginning around 8:45 p.m.. All coming your way right here on GPS TV.
This is McNair triple teamed as he drives the lane Couldn't get through the end.
You know I really have to say something good about Northeast Hill.
Coach Copeland was like, get in there and make sure you make it tough on them to score.
They're doing it.
Northeast is really doing a great job.
Double and triple teaming, as you just saw, double play foul was on Sharonda Brooks of Northeast Loose Ball.
Again, they can't get a pass out of bounds.
They can't pass it.
My memory is making it impossible.
Yep, Yep.
Making it impossible to get past you.
And here comes the red Rex.
Good ball movement.
This is the patient, James to Sanford.
And she's called four steps.
Yeah, that'll happen.
That'll happen.
Good ball handling, though.
Excellent.
Coach Copeland.
30 years.
30 years.
And I'm northeast.
He's got he's had so many experiences and it's really good for him and his team to be here today because, you know, he's like, hey, we're here because we work very hard throughout the season.
He can handle this pressure, he can do this.
And this team is really trying for him today.
And there's the pressure being off right there.
James.
There we go.
Look at James Steele and the bucket, and it's 3831 getting close.
The year gap is closed and the stadium is rising with excitement.
South Carolina again nice left hand by Salisbury.
Morris is Salisbury, a junior foot ten.
Excellent excellent play 4031 Waynesboro Brooks and Coach Copeland wants to talk it over.
It's like we need to take a second here.
Your gap closing now and northeast is really trying to stay in this game and it's early enough for them.
It could go either way.
Still, here's that last two place Waynesboro great play underneath and Salisbury with the left hand off the glass.
Beautiful.
Just simply beautiful.
These girls have practiced and worked so hard.
I mean, you had to figure they even playing basketball since they were little girls to be as good as they are right now.
I mean, this really a journey.
You know, we all see small children, a lot of little girls here in the stadium today watching these school girls saying one day that's going to be me.
And I'm sure there are a lot of kids at home and parents at home who are watching as well.
Here's a championship games from yesterday.
single-A girls championship one by Wesleyan over Jefferson, 6549 Clarkston loses to Taylor County in the boys single-A championship 62 to 50.
Meantime Gassy won another championship.
He tied at 5543.
We'll go big over to Carter 6445 of the boys championship and the triple AA Boys championship.
It was Crosskeys over Mitchell Baker, 80 to 78.
This is game one of five day on TV.
We have four more coming your way.
Can be a busy day if you love basketball.
This is the place to be.
This is a great place to be.
And the support is all around us.
And it's really great for these these both of these teams.
Swain's girls keep the ball Roberts to inbound to Robinson back to Roberts for three off the mark rebound Roberts She's all over the place Got of set it trying to set it There's just no way from the now northeast has a shot down the other end This is Brooks Harry Brooks on the layup making those points if she can.
That's the way you do it.
Get it down there, make the score happen.
The Tigers lead is just five and the hometown fans from Macon are on their feet cheering on their radar.
Oh, yeah.
This game is more physical than I anticipated to be.
I think that's probably surprising.
Quite a few people, both teams are ready to really get in there and use a whole body to play, and that's usually not the case you see in a lot of girls games.
This is exciting.
In the game for Strange Girl is Kelly Johnson.
This is McNair in the back court.
Good pressure by the rhetoric.
It's pressure transfer the entire game and we have a whistle underneath and the foul is going to be against the here Howard.
And here's the replay.
The caller got her on the air she got I was gonna say she tried to arm that arm cross.
So here's McNair playing right off the air that little girl maybe this could make that is way McNair on the day seven points two rebounds for Waynesboro one just 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Oh, she got her extra the free throw 4135 Waynesboro northeast trying to get one more hoop before the end of the corner taken away by Salisbury.
Down off the break, it's Roberts and she's got four steps.
Yes, good break by Shayla.
But she couldn't hit the break but she just couldn't.
That's how the that's been.
Sometimes you just really can't get it done.
Here's northeastern for 10 seconds now.
Well, work it.
Set it up since she's not running for second run, drive, shoot.
And it's off the mark as the buzzer sounds ending the third quarter.
So your third quarter scores Waynesboro 41 Northeast 35, an exciting fourth period coming your way in just a moment moment.
Funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships is provided in part by the following You're watching the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships on TBS.
And welcome back to the Macon Coliseum.
There you see the red Red Cheerleaders Range Girl aged 4135.
The Tigers fans are on their feet.
Yeah, so are the Rangers fans.
And it's great to see the whole community behind their teams.
These high school girls really should feel that's the warm feelings for all the support that they have here.
And for all of you who are watching Jim Johnson, Paula, Gwen Grant and Cindy Bowman bring you the final 8 minutes of the girls triple-A basketball championship here on TV.
And here we go.
Twinsburg 4135.
Wow.
Taking away the keys to James on the brakes.
He has it.
Oh, well, couldn't get it to her attack.
And back comes Waynesboro.
Turnovers are incredible.
Look at this.
Here we go.
Oh, look at that as James almost comes up with another steal with another steal against McNair Almost almost And you see now the intensity that's coming.
This is it, folks.
This is it.
Your last quarter will determine the determining quarter for this entire group.
McNair in traffic is called four step steps.
Yeah, that's all right.
That's all right.
Coach Andrews is saying, Come on, girls, just hang on, hang on.
Keep your head about to think about what?
To do it on the floor.
Think about our plan.
And now Sanford is call for double dribble.
So turn it over.
20 turnovers for Swain's goal 14 for Northeast.
So you see numbers are high game is intense with all these runs it's again the X factor Roberts gets it to Robinson back to Roberts Roberts stops and Pops Hill Good and the rebound underneath Roberts is there double team double team and this might go against Letitia James that is Lakisha James and Latisha James for personal foul in high school you only five that's it five has gone for one more and she's she's out early in the fourth automatically coming out of the game pretty soon just to stay with it those last few minutes quite a dilemma for coach Copeland is one of your best players with four personals on the free throw as good by Roberts in the lead is back to eight it's 4335 range Waynesboro that's Carrington Here's James in the right corner back outside it goes Evans for three off the mark man Almost loose ball down low James follows and there's a whistle Good hustle by Leticia James underneath They're trying really hard.
They try to make sure that they put their all those coaches say, You really need to set those, those plays out and get those shots and the foul is on number 14 Terrell Lewis for Waynesboro and the case of James at the line and James for shot is in easy way to put points up on the board have to be disciplined in free throws she can cut the lead to six right here she she does and she does it's important those are the points that are your gifts, your way of really coming back into the and closing gaps that we have like today.
So this is great.
Now we have a stop and play here.
The officials get together.
Not quite sure what the the holdup is.
I'm not even this is very interesting to see try to figure it out as well.
And they're looking over the situation.
I'm not quite sure what it is.
Coach Bobby Andrews is saying what's up and this will affect the momentum that you have with a game.
When you have a start down like this.
A lot of times this can affect the flow that you had on the court.
All right, Coach Now both teams, well, it looks like they're going to huddle up here for a minute, but terms are they calling 4444 white?
So that's Salisbury and that's her third personal.
So the last personal was against they thought it was Lewis, but they called it in Salisbury down the other end in transition, Waynesboro loses the ball.
Here comes northeast.
Oh here's Evans looking at James on the right wing Watch this Back out Evans from downtown off the mark rebounds down and put back by Matic's effort And all of a sudden it's a four point lead.
4339 Twinsburg people are rising to their feet Excitement city there.
Oh, I almost had a steal there Letitia James almost comes up with the steal his drive and called for stops Keenan McNair McNair called four steps again and northeast gets the ball back with a chance to make it a two point game.
Evans long inbounds pass to Carrington Northeast is trying to think it through.
This is their chance.
This is really a chance to set in the floor, taking a chance to read it.
Now let's think through the play and see what we get.
Stanford stops and pops off the mark.
Rebound down low as Carrington and the ball goes out of bounds off of Carrington trying to focus and really execute well there so northeast has put up a notch in this final quarter here's McNair Cross-court Pass Roberts drives the lane hasn't doesn't have a good shot good defensive play by sheer Carrington Excellent And the red Rats get the ball back.
Very good block That's what you have to do.
Get in there and really play it.
Howard gets it up to Carrington looking for the open man.
Here's Leticia James.
He drives and stops and pops over.
Robinson No good.
Rebound down low is the key.
Howard And she puts it home together.
We can do this together.
North east fans on their feet going for it now 41.
This is the closest we've been all game This is it And now Coach Andrews wants to talk it over with this Waynesboro Lady Tigers We have excitement in the stadium from everybody at home.
We can feel your support and energy.
This is a real community coming together.
And here's that last two.
The follow up by Howard and Howard put it home to make it a two point game.
4341 Waynesboro coach Bobby probably talking to Swain's group about some serious defense now because let's see if we get it.
Let's hear Lovie Smith in middle throwing down with a man.
Come on in there.
Whack instead of room.
Go, my man.
Well, he said you can't stand around.
So, you know, get out there and really put your all into this.
This is in.
You can't stand now.
This is the closest northeast has been since 440 left in the second quarter when they were down 2119.
So here comes Waynesboro Roberts dribbles top of the key, tries to find an open area, gets it to Salisbury in the corner and Salisbury lives it This is it Run off your hands and out of bounds.
Oh goodness.
And that is that coach Bobby Andrews to know.
And he said, hey, hey, you're not thinking yet have focus mine you giving it away.
And that's what he was talking about, not staying around.
Focus what you're doing because this is it.
James looks to drive the lane down low.
She goes, Carrington had a shot, but it was blocked and a whistle on the play.
And this might go against.
Nicky Robinson Yeah, I think so.
Naturally, it's going to go against Shayla Roberts and that's her fourth personal foul for fouls.
Now on Sheila Roberts, the fourth go down and Carrington misses the first of two.
Okay time to concentrate again these are some crucial points and now it's a one point game Waynesboro 43 Northeast 42 Waynesboro.
I was trying to figure out how to cover northeast here.
Full court pressure by the rhetoric straight ahead.
So now in their faces Roberts gets it over the time line for the ten second violation Roberts left side it goes up by Johnson off the mark rebound rebound by the winner excellent they come away from behind by Johnson and she's double teamed and I call for a double dribble.
Whoa Wow Tell you the intensity strong they game to play today so northeast with a chance to take the lead and now they want to talk it over.
This is a crucial moment, Coach Copeland.
It's going to give them real specifics now on how to hopefully get ahead, only trailing by a point 4342.
There's your personal finish in trouble here in the ball game now Northeast.
Exactly.
You got Letitia James with four fouls.
Remember, you only get a total of five in high school basketball and then Howard is three and then over in Waynesboro, you got Roberts with four, Johnson with three.
A lot of foul trouble here.
So these are last crucial minutes for 34 to go, 4 minutes, 34 seconds in this fourth quarter and some of your better players a real foul trouble.
Be interesting to see what Coach Copeland is telling his players right now.
I tell you what, he certainly has told him in the second half here, let's apply that pressure, keep the pressure on Waynesboro and hopefully we'll get some turnovers.
And I think that's what's happened so far.
Exactly.
Exactly.
Was that points on the board and they started making easy shots.
He was stressing to them, but they were missing missing easy shots and they now come on with that.
So do you have.
A one point difference in 4 minutes and a little more to go.
So let's see how shapes up now.
The last time northeast led in this ballgame was 17, 16, and that was with 605 left in the second quarter.
So here's a chance to take the lead since then.
First time in the ballgame.
Here's James tries baseline and the shot is good.
It's good.
So James north east ahead for the first time since the second quarter 4443 back the other end it's McNair and a blocking foul has been called on the Raider apps and this one's going to go against keeper Howard.
Oh we might have an injury on the floor here too and that's our fourth personal foul.
So Chandler is coming out onto the floor and that's Daniel McNair on the floor.
She's holding her back.
She really hit the floor hard.
And you know what?
It is not the wind out of her, but she is holding her back.
So we'll just have to see who's just taking a look at the play here.
Might have tripped over a foot there, hit the ground, came right down, and that it's quite a collision and it looks like she's going to stay in the game.
She's tough to shoot this free throws.
Yeah, yeah.
There's McNair, eight points, two rebounds, three for four on the free throw line, which is good for the offensive side.
Coach Andrew's going to send in a substitution.
He's looking to bring in Brooke Freeman.
First time she's in the ballgame today.
She's a fresh look who's going to come in here for McNair to shoot those free throws.
Yes.
So McNair will head to the bench and I'm sure Bowman will find out exactly what's going on with McNair.
And I'll tell you what, right off the bench, put a point up.
There's nothing it for Freeman, huh?
You go like right And just like that two times in 44 piece and remains 44 apiece Northeast on the run this is James in the frontcourt James and it's the ball was tipped by Roberts and she's going to call for the personal shield and that's her fifth purse.
That's it all on Roberts.
Roberts is out.
Oh, wow.
That's really tight.
One of their best players.
So Roberts has gone with five fouls at 406 left in the fourth quarter.
Let's remember this time, because that could be a big turning point in the ball game.
They really can.
I mean, you're losing Shayla Roberson.
You still have 4 minutes to go in your fourth quarter.
So Roberts fouls out with 16 points.
A great game for Roberts He excellent and on the line is Lakeisha James and we know northeast has the lead again at 4544 in and out Rebound Robinson here comes Waynesboro Here's McNair back in the ball game Obviously she's feeling much better.
Oh I think she recovered really well.
But it's a championship game.
That's right.
Everything goes to the side.
Nice pass down low to Maria branch and she puts it home.
Excellent.
And it's 4645.
Swish Pearl Evans for three pointer off the mark Here comes Waynesboro in the transition Johnson intercepted by James and out of bounds and swings Brooke We'll keep the ball Oh here we go again Here we go again Fast pace But that fast paced action is just been key in this entire game.
And it's been it's made it even more exciting to watch.
But the skill level is really great in both of these teams.
Robinson From Ten Feet on, Robinson hits the ten footer and it's 4845 Swain's Burrell.
So the Lady tigers back up to a three point lead, 315 to go final quarter.
Howard works against Robinson gets the shot up no good rebound Herrington down low We have a jump ball and the possession Al points to northeast northeast try to collect themselves and really trying to figure out how to set up before so they can really get some points on the board.
They don't want to lose get too far behind here.
Carrington uses the glass and it's 4847 swings.
PEARL There you go.
Oh, almost intercepted here by Stanford.
Good defensive play by Matic 72.
Great swings, girl.
Keep it and inbounds in the back court Here's Robinson in the front court guarded by Carrington Robinson Turnaround jumper off the mark Rebound down low by Blanche French puts it up one glass puts it up twice and we have a whistle Good effort and again trying to get a shot off to try to get a rebound and try one more time.
Fouls on the third personal and Grant's to the line shooting to Grant's gives Waynesboro a two point lead 4947 post game now these last few minutes and the seven is good back to a three point lead for the lady Tigers.
Here comes the Raider ranch and you see how those free throws can put you hit.
Those points are so important and it puts Waynesville back ahead again.
James drives the lane dishes off Carrington down low.
Yes.
Carrington And it's 5049, closing it down to a one point lead.
This is where the intensity is strong.
Oh, go away by James That's his foul Lakisha James fouled underneath by number 34 Kelly Johnson.
Here's opportunity for northeast now to turn what a second half by sheer pairing pitches six for six from the field and the second half incredible incredible and Jerry lines the score at 51.
That's what coach Coughlin was talking about make those shots now for the league.
Oh, she got it.
Ice in her veins.
There you go.
51, 5051 50 in favor of North stowed away by ten pitches off.
What a nice throw.
Selfish fatigue.
Sanford finishes it off and north East has a 5350 lead with 158 to go unselfish play by the rain really see this that they they really work that that was teamwork at its best.
Here it is again in fact take a look at this.
She gets down seismic to pass and, knucklehead.
You put it in there.
Touchdown What a play by James and Sanford finishes and all that Now the whole game.
Coach Alvin Copeland and North he's thinking of the game plan to come back now it's Bobby Andrews turned to say okay guys girls now here's what we have to do in order to come back to win this game.
That's right.
And so there you go.
That's the challenge.
That's the challenge and really the big pressure of this kind of game.
You're at this level because it's like, all right, you don't always get to stay ahead.
You got to be able to change a switch up and flow with it.
And that's time.
A real challenge.
B.C.
teams seem to handle it quite well.
And in case you're just joining us, Cindy Beaumont mentioned in the top of the broadcast, coach Alvin Copeland and coach Bobby Andrews, they were fraternity brothers.
Yep.
In college.
Incredible, incredible.
All right.
Northeastern joined their biggest league since they led the way back in the second quarter, his team to win.
So here comes Twinsburg and they get into the front court.
Out of trouble is Harry Johnson and now the playmaker McNair since Roberts has found out here's McNair drives the lane and we have a whistle and they're going to call an offensive on McNair.
For a moment I thought it was going to go against a train wreck.
I was kind of thinking the same thing.
I was surprised.
In fact, I think the fans and thinking the same thing listen to it looks like the defense defensive players had their feet planted, though.
Yeah.
So McNair gets called for the personal.
Evans tries to break the full court pressure, pass Howard on the right wing.
Here's Howard She looks to slow it down.
Back out to Evans and now an official time out and it looks like at midcourt we have an injured for Waynesboro.
That's number 42.
Harriet Johnson and Harriet takes a seat on the bench.
There she is.
She's going to say she's crying.
It looks like she ran to her teammates.
Alston on the inbounds Back to live at 121 to go and Northeast like they're getting into the four corners, something deep Smith made popular at North Carolina years ago.
Yes, and a whistle and now down by three swings curl having to foul pokes at northeast northeastern miss in the charity straight of course Copeland telling them to relax go ahead just walk through it United you talked about it Sanford out wide and she hits the first of two It's 5450 Northeast and the second is not so good, 5550.
That equals the biggest lead of the game at five point swings.
We're trying to figure out now how to come back, how to go down for McNair double team now the back court and Swain's girl calls a timeout.
Waynesboro has to realign, rethink how they're going to exactly play out this last minute.
The game up by five.
It's just amazing.
Their biggest lead of the game and the excitement from the fans here in the stadium in the Coliseum here in Macon is just electric.
They got rid of their gold and that was strange.
Boros last time out with a minute, three to go.
Coach Andrews is in his huddle with his team.
Let's listen to Coach Andrews.
Let me go for the ball And he knew that his man in the long time on the ball now great being great the 39 year old had one to retire.
So Coach Andrews trying to get his Lady Tigers prepared for this last minute 3 seconds.
He said, You got time here.
You have time so you can make it happen.
He said, You got to get that ball.
Stay on the ball.
So here we go.
Here's Nicky Robinson, brings it across the time line.
Nicky in traffic loses it.
This ball picked up by Johnson and we have a whistle before the shot and this one's going to go against Monique Sanford, number 31 three And here's opportunity for same girl to really put some points on the board and very disappointed I think throws so changes stresses that works on that in practice Kelly Johnson hits the first of two it's 5551 coming in the game for Swain's barrow is number 14 Tara Lewis, and she replaces Maria branch number 52.
And the second is also good.
It's now a three point game as Johnson hits the free throw and a foul path caught on.
Kelly Johnson There's your timeouts remaining of course we just mentioned transfer throw is out of time.
That's right.
He still has three full time outs so they're able to really maximize on this situation.
And again with 55 seconds left on the clock, it's very interesting to see how this all works out.
And Kelly Johnson has just committed her fifth personal foul.
She has to take the bench, take a seat on the bench and in to the game for Waynesboro is number 11.
Latrice Pearson his time on the line is more take Sanford for northeast and I'll tell you what the real threats are cashing in on those free throws.
Oh, as well.
I should and that was what Coach Copeland was telling them at the half to miss on the easy points like your free throws.
There you go.
Nothing but net.
Nothing.
Let me see, lady.
Now.
57, 52, northeast, 52 seconds to go stolen away by Evans down his James top of the court and she's fouled by Nicki Robinson Great pressure on defense by the redirects excellent that's what you do get in there and force action It's close we're in the last seconds down and the raider at benches is feeling it now.
Oh, yeah.
Here's James.
Oops.
One of their rare misses.
Rare in the game.
Another opportunity, Brooke Freeman and she replaces Terrell Lewis for Waynesboro.
Hey, Tom James hits the second of two and it's 5852.
Their biggest lead of the game in the back court.
It's McNair and she turns it over.
Oh, that full court pressure has become too much for Waynesboro in the late moments here of the game.
And that's what Coach Bobby Andrews was talking about at the half about leading.
They really handle that.
And Stanford is fouled by McNair with 37 seconds to go.
What at times Mo takes effort 12 points seven rebounds Great game is yet another point for they are proud in day to day That was a deliberate foul they grabbed her jersey so penalty just to get the two free throws but northeast gets the ball back.
That's right.
And see that's opportunity I'm sure because Andrews isn't happy about that.
They just gave it to him and another foul and I think this one's going to go against number 11 finishing touches and he does.
And back to the line go Stanford.
Yet another opportunity.
It's funny how these kinds of fouls and mistakes off time can just give you to other team so much opportunity.
Well didn't get that 162 5235 seconds to go in what has turned into a tale of two halves.
It really has it I mean Northeast has really come back strong and now dominating here in these last seconds of the game.
Very impressive.
Both teams just really great by the day.
McDeere up off court this is Robinson misses the layup and a jump ball possession now points to Waynesboro 21 seconds to go What a comeback by the redress and strange girl Keep it here.
Two inbounds gets it down low and it's knocked out of bounds by northeast.
Northeast.
Not letting up on any of that pressure.
They're going to defend this lead as well.
They said great trick pass inside, Robinson misses the shot.
Carrington with the rebound his team's on the right wing.
10 seconds to go down low.
Howard Kent makes the shot 5 seconds for half court Shot by Robinson is off the mark.
The crowd thinks the game's over.
One gassed up with 2 seconds to go.
So with 2 seconds to go, northeast will win it again.
The triple AA championship.
Evans the shots off and there you have it the reigning rich are the 2000 to triple state champions to congratulations to an excellent basketball game from both teams.
Waynesburg did an excellent job.
Northeast Raider it's gets a walk off with the today excellent excellent.
And let's go to Cindy Beaumont.
Cindy, I've got to take a break.
I am here with Coach Copeland.
Congratulations to you all.
We got celebration going on here.
I can't say as I blame them.
You are the 38c champions.
How Do your girls keep their heads and keep on coming back end after game?
Well, we have some tough girls and they work really hard and we are just so proud of them.
I'm just glad they didn't lose the composure when we got 11 points down.
That's right.
You kept the full court press going.
You double and triple team at some point.
Do you think it just wore them out?
Yeah, I think they were getting a little tired.
Of course it was wearing us out too, but we had to hang in here and try to do what we had to do.
Well, how about those free throws?
I know you always stressed to them that they're three points.
They should go for a free throw with win games.
And I can't say enough about Mota coming down the stretch.
He hit some good free throws and just didn't miss that.
And that was a great job.
And how was Motif game overall?
She seemed to really be on it tonight.
Well, I think mostly played well overall.
At least she stayed in the game as tight as it.
Well, that is very true.
Well, you handle the pressure well being under the big top.
And this is a sweet win after having gone down last year.
This was a very sweet win.
And of course, I'm glad we were able to win another championship because it's been the 85 since we won the state championship in basketball.
So I'm really proud of the girls.
I'm very happy.
While I congratulate you, the scoreboard doesn't lie.
Want to stay champs?
You go join your team.
Thank you, Coach.
That's it from down here.
Back to you, Jim and Paula.
Thank you, Cindy.
Northeast outscored Waynesboro 4020 in the second half and that's that game for both sides.
I see tears over in Waynesboro.
They did a fantastic job.
Thanks for everybody, Paula.
Great job again for Paul going credit.
Cindy Bowman.
I'm Jim Tanaka.
