It's a baby snapping turtle.
It still has mud on its shell, so I'm assuming it hatched out from its leathery egg early this morning.
You can see it has ridges all the way around the back side of the shell, and that helps us identify it as a snapping turtle.
And its little tail is about the same length as its shell.
It's a pretty long tail, actually, for such a little turtle.
The adult snapping turtle would have laid her eggs probably in May or June, and these little hatchlings don't come out until about 60 to 90 days after their eggs.
Those eggs have been laid.
Unfortunately, only about 1% of little hatchling turtles make it to adulthood.
And that's because some get run over by cars.
Oftentimes they're snatched up by opossums or raccoons or once they make it to the water.
Larger fish or even great blue herons will eat them, too.
So if you see one by the edge of the road, give it a helping hand.
Take it in the direction that it was headed and take it close to the edge of the water and let it scramble into the water on its own.
Remember, you can find your own outdoor elements or baby snapping turtles when you visit area parks.
And that's your area.
We'll see you soon.
