(soft music) - [Ross] Is it true that swans mate for life?
- [Aidan] Ross is certainly jealous of his wife falling for somebody else.
- [Ross] Or at least until a more handsome swan appears.
(laughs) - [Aidan] He's not getting any younger and this is a very talented, young, bohemian, beautiful poet.
He sees that it's not just a fling.
It's not done out of vengeance because he knows what that feels like with Elizabeth, but you can still love somebody, and have love for somebody else.
He's put her in a position like that before, too, so he can't just turn around and go what are you doing?
I don't understand.
- It was important for Demelza to do what she did with Hugh, because she needed the confidence in herself.
You know Ross betrayed her, let's not forget that.
- I think it is better if we do not meet at all now.
- And so for her it was a way of being noticed, a way of being appreciated, by another man who just loved her for who she is.
It was an important milestone for them both in order to see each other on an equal footing, as well, for Ross to really see Demelza as the independent woman that she is, and realize that he has to treat her right, because she doesn't depend on him, and she won't wait around for him, she will not be treated badly by him.
- [Ross] I think perhaps I've taken you for granted.
- [Aidan] There's a lot of confusion and trepidation about where they are.
And it's a uncomfortable for Ross.
I think he really thinks that he's losing her.
- [Ross] You are the better part of me.
- [Demelza] Think perhaps I've been guilty of the same.
- [Aidan] It's interesting that we explore this in a really grown up way you know, Demelza and Ross talk about it.
- I think what is beautiful about Demelza is that she realizes that that was wrong, and that's not what she wants, nor is it the person that she wants to be.
And so we see her go on a journey of actually discovering who she is, and what is important to her, and that is Ross.
- It's quite horrible how Hugh dies, that they never got to experience all they could of, in that relationship.
Demelza will always be sort of chasing that, or Ross will feel like it didn't come to it's own natural end.
His ghost will always be there.
