Torpedo The USS Springfield carries the state-of-the-art Mark-48 ADCAP (Advanced Capability) torpedo. Nineteen feet in length, this destructive weapon weighs 3,695 pounds and contains 650 pounds of explosive. It can travel more than five miles in range, 1,200 feet in depth and at a speed of thirty-two miles per hour. The torpedoes can operate with or without wire guidance (wires that trail behind the torpedo maintain contact with the sub), and can conduct multiple reattacks if they miss their target.
